Public Holiday announced on 28 January 2025

The Sindh Education Department has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on January 28th to observe Shab-e-Meraj. This special day is marked to honor an important event in Islamic tradition when Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, experienced a miraculous journey.

Shab-e-Meraj is celebrated each year on the 27th day of the Islamic month of Rajab. On this night, it is believed that the Prophet was visited by the Archangel Gabriel. He was given a heavenly creature called Buraq to ride, and together they traveled from Mecca to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. From there, the Prophet ascended to heaven where he met Allah. This journey is both a significant religious event and a moment of deep spiritual reflection for Muslims.

In observance of this holy night, both private and government educational institutions in Sindh will remain closed. This closure allows communities to engage in activities such as prayer meetings and religious gatherings in mosques, where people come together to recite prayers and religious praises. These activities are done with great respect and devotion, reflecting the significance of this event in Islamic culture.

Considering the importance of Shab-e-Meraj, it would be appropriate for other provinces to contemplate a similar holiday to allow their residents to observe this day with the same reverence. Additionally, a national holiday declared by the federal government could ensure that all Muslims across Pakistan have the opportunity to participate in the commemorations without concern for educational or professional obligations. This would not only show respect for religious practices but also promote unity and inclusiveness throughout the country.
